We're so excited to bring you this post: This is the first of many, designed to share your personal stories and successes, where you get to show off and explain just how much your life has changed since going Paleo and/or beginning Crossfit. We know these changes are hard and you put in the work everyday to fight for your health, and you deserve to celebrate it! Since we've got a photographer as part of the She Thrives team, we want to take you out on the shoot of your dreams and let you shine- we want to see that confidence, strength and pride in your eyes, and we want to celebrate you for putting the time, investment, and effort into persuing a healthy life. For more images from this gorgeous shoot, (or to learn how to get your own!) visit Taylor's website.
First up, we have Kim! We asked her a few questions to learn about her journey, and we hope her story inspires you!
WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE BEFORE CROSSFIT AND PALEO NUTRITION?
I had been overweight since going through menopause (so fun!) and had tried various diets and exercise programs to get back on track, but couldn’t keep the weight off. I often felt tired and stressed and I kind of lost my zest for life; I shied away from activities and people. I sometimes thought, “Crap, is life just all downhill from here?” Not a question you want to be asking yourself, not a good place to be.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST NOTICEABLE CHANGE TO YOUR HEALTH?
The biggest difference that I’ve noticed is that I FEEL MORE! I feel more energized, more focused, more playful, more confident, more interesting, more grateful, and more alive. I don’t get tension headaches anymore or feel backaches from carrying stress around. I can play soccer with the high school kids in my program, I can lift a 100 pound rock and carry it to my garden. The Paleo lifestyle has taught me to eat to live, to give my body what it needs to do its best. Crossfit has taught me to push myself a little harder. We’re all stronger than we think, but we have to go to edge to find it out!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE TO YOUR MINDSET/BODY IMAGE?
For the first time in my life I love the way I look in clothes! I’ve always struggled to find clothes that fit, even when I was young because I’ve always had a large chest (I even had a reduction, but they grew back!) Paleo and Crossfit have allowed me to lose 20 pounds and now my boobs are able to get themselves into some really fun clothes. I used to focus on all the things I hated about my body and fantasized about when I could dip into my retirement to get some plastic surgery. Now I focus on all the things my strong body can do for me and I fantasize about doing a handstand pushup or Rxing a lift! I’m coming for you overhead squats!
WHAT DID THIS PHOTO SHOOT MEAN TO YOU?
Wow! I got a little emotional thinking about this one. I’ve never felt comfortable having attention focused on me. I’ve always been critical of myself and if someone said something nice about the way I looked, I thought to myself, “Why did they say that?”. The photo shoot made me take a good long look at myself; the person I saw for so many years and the person I see now. It was so amazing to have my hair and make-up done and wear clothes that I never would have dared to wear a year ago. I really did look beautiful! It was a very special experience and the perfect way to celebrate the healthy changes I’ve made. I can look at the fabulous photos Taylor took and say, “ You’re gonna be sixty in a few months? Oh yeah, bring it on!”
